Plant Health Care
Workshop-Review
On Friday, the 13th
of July, Ames
Iowa was invaded (no not by Freddy Kruger but) by over forty-five tree
professionals from around the state. They were there to attend a
workshop
on Plant Health Care (PHC). Our board was extremely pleased at the
diverse
representation of the people that were present. Over a dozen of them
were
non-members and included tree farmers, nurserymen and women, and lawn
care
employees. We had many positive comments from these individuals and
plan
on continuing our cooperation with others in the green industry.
Our day started with
Dr. John Ball,
our keynote speaker, who gave an overview of "PHC Process." John’s
definition
of PHC is to use the plant as the focus. The PHC program attempts to
prevent
problems through proper planting, site selection and maintenance. The
mainstay
of the PHC process is monitoring. Other keys to successful PHC programs
include a site inventory, which identifies key plants and possible
environmental
stresses. Client interaction is crucial to a successful PHC program;
clients
can give you the history of the site as well as their expectations
about
their landscaping
Dr. Jeff Iles
followed by giving
a presentation on "Plant Selection." His outdoor session stressed the
importance
of determining what is suitable for planting based upon the site. We
looked
at site constraints such as growing space, climate and microclimate,
and
soil characteristics. In July, it is difficult to think about snow, but
we even looked at the effects of plantings on snow removal and how the
plants would tolerate de-icing materials.
Even though you may
plant the right
tree in the right place, factors beyond your control may allow insect
and
disease problems to occur. Our afternoon session, "Disease and Insects
of Iowa," gave an update of the most current problems in the state. We
started our session with a slide show highlighting recent problems and
what the state may encounter in the future. Entomologists Dr. Woody
Hart
and Dr. Mark Shour teamed with pathologist/diagnosticians Paula Flynn
and
Barbara Ambruzus to lead us on a tour of current problems encountered
on
the Iowa State University (ISU) campus.
Our day concluded
with our keynote
speaker giving a hands on approach to field diagnosis. We looked at
some
declining trees and then Dr. Ball drafted three people to play the roll
of client and arborist to determine the history behind the declining
tree.
It was the arborist’s job to determine what had happened to the tree,
when
it had happened, and what or how he was going to rectify the
problem.
This gave the participants a chance to see how one gathers information
and the importance of gaining a client’s trust.
I would like to thank
the staff at
ISU for all the help in putting this program together. The next time
that
you see Barbara Ambruzus, Paula Flynn, Jeff Iles, Mark Shour and Woody
Hart thank them for all the continued support that they have provided
to
the IAA. I would also like to thank Chris Feeley with his help in this
program but also his assistance with the IAA web page.
October 20,
2000. Construction
Damage Workshop. Preventing construction damage, techniques for
assisting
injured trees, repairing soil impacted by construction activities,
planting
methods for poor soils, proper tree selection. Gary Johnson and
Jeff
Iles were the speakers.
Rigging workshop held
in Amana and
was presented by Ken Palmer and Norm Hall from Arbormaster
Training.
The title was The Art and Science of Practical Rigging.
