Agroforestry research at Iowa State is interdisciplinary research in every respect. Researchers from Forestry, Agronomy, Animal Ecology, Earth Resources, Entomology, and Plant Pathology all contribute to various aspects of the research program, and collectively, they are referred to as IStART (Iowa State Agroforestry Research Team). Within the broad definition that the Department uses for agroforestry, numerous research projects are carried out by many different departments. Currently approved research projects associated with the Iowa Agriculture and Home Economics Experiment Station on campus are:

• Analysis of soil nutrient supply and nutrient uptake kenetics for selected hardwood species

 
• Forest tree improvement--selection, breeding, and seed production, Phase V

 
• Integrated riparian management systems to control agriculture pollution and enhance wildlife habitat; agroforestry systems for Iowa and the Midwest

 
• Formulating soybean based resins to be used in wood adhesive systems

 
• Developing management strategies for insect pests of short rotation Populus

 
• Modeling a shelterbelt agroforestry system

 
• Contour strip-cropping with trees as a sustainable land use on highly erodible land

 
• Tropical Forest Preservation Research Program
